The Olympics 2016 - Category: Gymnastics

Welcome To The Gymnastics Olympics 2016. We will be telling you a bit about gymnastics in the olympics.

Gymnastics became an Olympic sport in 1896. Gymnastics is a violent and very dangerous sport, so that means that everyone that is in the olympic sport right now has been training for a very long time to get all of their tricks and flips right. I think you will like this blog because that isn’t where the fun ends. Gymnastics is a really popular sport. Not saying this is true but we think that gymnastics is one of the most famous or popular sports in the olympics.

Some people think why are gymnasts so small? Well here’s why. Most girls in gymnastics olympics were born quite short, so they learnt to do their gymnastics at a short hight. Others obviously were born a lot taller. The main reason athletes in olympic gymnastics is because it would be easier and they probably wouldn’t get hurt as bad as other athletes do.

Balance beam, pommel horse, parallel bars, rings in artistics gymnast the athletes compete on different apparatus in individual and team events, eight for men and six for women. Combining strength, balance, flexibility and grace, gymnast push themselves to their physical limits using a variety of apparatus, such as vaults, bars and beam, as well as in the spectacular apparatus-free floor routines.

"The first women's gymnastics instruction in the United States was given at Mount Holyoke College in 1862."

With performances of strength and acrobatic skill featuring incredible flips and summersaults, the gymnastics on display across the full week of events will have you reassessing what you thought the human body was capable of.

What do you think about gymnastics now?

Tough Guy and Gal Challenge!

The Rotorua tough guy and gal challenge is coming up, and we are going to tell all you need to know about it. First you'll need to know what it is. Well the tough guy and gal challenge is a huge mud obstacle course where you can fall in mud and get super dirty, but it’s a super fun event and there's even an adult version. The tough guy and gal challenge is also a huge fundraiser for 'Cure kids' charity, and last year  participants have raised almost $40,000.

The event is being held in the Red Woods on the 19 August, and is also being held in Hamilton, Palmerston North, and heaps more places in New Zealand. There will also be spot prizes that will be drawn at the end of the course., but we can definitely beat that amount.

If your entering or already entered and don't know what to wear then hear are some ideas. Well your going to be super dirty after so pack something warm to wear afterwards. But during the course you should probably wear a pair of shorts a short sleeve t-shirt and a jersey. So that’s all you really need to wear.

If you like to enter the tough guy and gal challenge go to junior tough guy and gal challenge. These are the obstacles from last year. Running in muddle water next is running on rocks the under a net next is walking through a tunnel finely you run over some fences. If you what to know  who far you run. 3 and 4 run 1.5km. Year 5 and 6 3.5km.

We are entering the challenge, are you?

Last week we visited Tunohopu Marae. We were welcomed onto the marae with a Pōhiri. Then we split into groups and did different activities, like visiting the mud pools, the village and discovering koru patterns in the marae; we also made flatbread for lunch.

What were you best memories of the day, and what did you find interesting?

On Tuesday we went on a trip to Omanu Beach; below you can see the photos of our wonderful experience. We had lots of fun in excellent weather, plus we learnt a lot about surf safety.

We have also been learning how to write compound senentences using BOYS (but, or, yet, so) to join two simple sentences. Below is our collaborative Padlet where students have practiced this.

Parent Challenge: Can you write a BOYS sentence as a comment? You are allowed to ask your child for help :-)

Another huge THANK YOU to all our parent helpers.

Class Rules 2016

In a classroom full of students learning we need rules to guide our behaviour and learning so that everyone has an equal opportunity to learn. Rules also help students develop citizenship and social etiquette. Room 12 students have discussed our class rules, consequences and rewards. Below is a photo of our class rules which we follow. We encourage parents and whanua to discuss these at home.

Parents do you have any comments on our class rules?
